Raise Drinking Age?

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd says he'd personally like to see the legal drinking age lifted to 21.

But there would have to be rigorous debate and evidence that the policy could reduce binge drinking before the Government would consider it, he said.

"If the evidence is there and it is capable of being proven that it works, then we (will) look at these things and make a decision," Mr Rudd said, when quizzed on ABC Television's Q&A program last night.

Mr Rudd told the audience, including 200 high school students, that booze, like alcopops, was a concerning factor in P-Plate driving deaths.

"(The) drinking rates of young teenagers (is) going through the roof ... and hugely affecting their ability to, frankly, manoeuvre a car."

He stopped short of calling for a federal intervention, but said "a whole lot of work" was needed to address the alarming road toll.

The Federal Government was working to regulate car safety standards across the states, and automatic systems in cars for better handling, he added.

Personally I think this is bullshit

I think it's a load of shit as well, I mean it's going to stop people drinking in pubs but they will still be drinking at home and at friends places.

Lower the driving age, don't heighten the drinking age.

Lower it and kids will have more road experience/maturity before they can drink.

Now stop having us do your homework for you.

As if having a 'legal' drinking age has stopped anyone from underage drinking anyway.
I agree with the above comments, raising the legal drinking age will cause more problems than it will solve.

I actually agree on the raising the drinking age. I have thought about it since I was about 14 maybe younger, it makes more sense. Not just because we can match America, but so underage drinking won't start as young as it does rn. People's perceptions would change eventually.

This would piss off Melbourne kids. Raising the age to 21 would probably entail venues starting to enforce 21+ age restrictions on shows instead of 18+ hahaha. Pushing such policy is political suicide anyway; they'd have to try and raise the voting age first (that won't work either).

I lived somewhere where you could get your learners at 14 and could drink at 21. Yet you were allowed into bars at 19.

Did it make a difference? Hell no. I drank underage all the time. I think it's more of an education and changing the drinking and driving cultures from the ground up.

Some people are always going to be morons, regardless of age. Lifting the drinking age only punishes those people who aren't morons.

I'd like to know where this rigourous debate and evidence standard went when it came to Conroy's plan to break the internets.

+1

But yeah I don't agree with upping the age limit.
At 18 you can vote, you can work, get married, get a mortgage, you can even join the army and be sent overseas into a war zone to be shot at, basically you are an adult...but you can't go down the pub and have a beer...fucking stupid idea!!

Underage drinking and binge drinking have always been problems and I guess they always will...more education may help.

doesn't bother me really... but if they're going to raise it i think they should be taking some of that "alcopop" tax off... it clearly doesn't work, so in with the new, and out with the old.

Stupid idea.

People grow up by learning from their mistakes and GROWING up.

Politicians need to realise that none of this shit works, it just makes people pissed off.

Look at our generation, we are a bunch of pussies compared to our parents, why? because they stopped us from doing so many things, stopped the kane in school etc. Therefore we learn't we can do what the fuck we want, fuck our parents.
The next few generations will be 10x worse.

Kids can't even go out and play in the street anymore because one pedophile on the other side of the country took a kid a few months ago so people asume there kids are gonna get taken.

Interfering with nature only fucks shit up. its been 18+ forever, if they change it, it's only gonna make underage drinking 100x worse.
