I saw District 9 a few nights ago. BRILLIANT. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought the acting was great, had a few laughs, nearly cried. I thought the CG stuff was pretty good. Two thumbs up.

It was TERRIBLE in a completely boring, overdone and poorly acted way.

I've heard that what was a promising start turned into a crappy CGI action film in the second half.

Hmm I think there should have been much more action in it for it to be an action film. I found it to be more emotional than anything to be honest. And I had no problem with the CGI, there was a few times when the compositing wasn't super but otherwise it was fine and I'm usually very picky when it comes to CGI. It can ruin a whole movie for me but not once during the movie did I think the aliens weren't real. :'D

I have been sick, so have watched about 16 movies since Wednesday. I'll give a quick run down of what I thought of the important ones:

Gangs of New York was underrated. Yes, it does hinge a lot on Day Lewis' performance, and for such a long film the plot does run a little thin and get tangled up on itself near the end, but I really enjoyed it.

The King of Comedy is another of Scorsese's underrated films. It's much a companion piece to Taxi Driver, as De Niro's delirious Pupkin is the comedic cousin of Travis, and all performances in this film provide excellent support for the message of the film.

Duck Soup is brilliant. Groucho is a master of delivery, and many times his simple yet highly witty remarks made me a laugh out loud. It's rare for that to happen when watching a comedy by myself, let alone such an old one.

I watched all the Evil Dead films and found Army of Darkness to be my favourite. Most will be surprised by that, but I found the bigger budget allowed everything to be a bit more fleshed out. Ash became more than a face on a screen, and technically this film was amazing. The first two was also technically sound, but highly redundant, so that is why I find the third the best.

Darkman is shit. It is way too cheesy, and was a precursor to Raimi's apparent destruction of Spiderman 3. I mean a guy shooting grenades over the shoulder of a guy with a machine gun out of a chopper on a public road? Bit much.

The Wickerman was amazing. Subtle and distinct, even if a little predictable in my eyes. Most people will laugh at the music scenes, but if you understand why they are there you are bound to love the film.

I got me an ego boosting sig. Finally!

+1

Thank God that Peter Jackson and Weta had little to do with it unlike they seem to imply when talking to people. Stare

Jared Leto was quite good in it but ultimately the film itself was quite average. There are some really cringe worthy moments in it, that's for sure!

Public Enemies.
Where to start?
The camera work in most places reminded me of Cloverfield.
The story and characters are badly introduced.
The gunshots sound like capguns, and look like capguns with bad lighting effects.
And Marion Cotillard far out-shone Depp.

I agree with you except for the last part. Depp played a Depp character, but he was the only one to remind me of the actual person he was portraying.

I think Mann wanted to highlight the fast pace and thrill of being part of Dillinger's crew with the whole fast motion/slow shutter speed, but you think he'd know to do that you actually have to show thrilling things.

I got me an ego boosting sig. Finally!

Yeah. And I went into it not actually knowing the Dillinger story, so I have no idea who was close to the character.
Although the way the characters were introduced it almost seems like they assumed you'd watch it knowing the whole Dillinger story.

I hate this no editing thing. After reading the FBI Page on Dillinger, they took a lot of creative license with the story. =/
Like changing his girlfriend's name for starters...
Taking out his wife...
Changing their crimes...
Wow.

Not to mention the fact that Dillinger died before the rest of the people we see: Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, etc. And there is no way in hell Dillinger ever walked into the Dillinger unit. If he did he'd have been killed on the spot.

Still, you have to do it for cinema's sake.

Yeah that was a bit ridiculous. Especially since he didn't even disguise his voice.

With Dakota Fanning? I quite enjoyed it, but you have to pay attention or it can get confusing.

saw Public Enemies at this cinema last night
would give it *** / 5
Wasn't a bad movie, but they left out some important parts for some more irrelevent ones.
Additionally, in real life Pretty Boy Floyd was actually killed after Dillinger dies.

Just saw District 9
Fucking AMAZING movie
The first half is kinda boring but once it gets going it is so awesome
I felt so sick for most of it because it had bloody Cloverfield style camera work which gave me motion sickness Sad
The last half didn't have as much and was fucking AMAZING
GREAT movie
